Best Time to Visit Kufri, Himachal Pradesh

Kufri's experience changes more with the season than almost anywhere else in the upper Shimla hills. The same town that offers snow activities in January is a pleasant nature-stop in May and a crisp, crowd-free viewpoint in October. Picking the right time depends entirely on what you want from the trip.

Winter (December to February) is Kufri's most famous season. Snow usually arrives in January and lasts into February, and basic activities like tobogganing become available. This is when Kufri is at its busiest — especially on weekends, when visitors come up from Shimla and the plains specifically for the snow. If snow is your priority, go on a weekday, expect crowds, and book accommodation well ahead. The road to Kufri can also see occasional closures after heavy snowfall, so check conditions.

Spring and summer (March to June) are the most reliable time for pleasant weather and clear views. The snow has melted, the cedar forest is green, and the Himalayan Nature Park and Mahasu Peak viewpoints are at their best. May and June are the busiest months in this window as they coincide with school holidays — if you want quieter weather, March and April are a better pick, with cool days and fewer visitors.

The monsoon (July to September) turns the hills around Kufri vividly green, but it brings rain and the risk of road disruption. If you do not mind wet weather and want the landscape at its lushest, this can be a peaceful time — visitor numbers drop sharply — but you should check road conditions before travelling and build some flexibility into your plans.

Autumn (October to November) is arguably the nicest time to visit if you are not chasing snow. The weather is crisp, the skies are clear, and the apple orchards around nearby Fagu and Theog are in harvest. Crowds are well down from the summer peak, and the views from Mahasu Peak are sharp and far-reaching. It is also a great time to combine Kufri with a drive through the apple belt.

Wherever you stay, avoid the peak holiday weekends if you can — Kufri's limited infrastructure gets stretched.
