Kufri Travel Guide: Places to Visit and Things to Do

Kufri is a small hill station about 16 km from Shimla, known for its winter snow, the Himalayan Nature Park, and views toward the greater ranges. It is one of the most popular stops in the upper Shimla hills, which means it rewards a little planning — the experience is very different on a quiet weekday morning than on a busy winter weekend.

The Himalayan Nature Park is the highlight for most visitors. Set in a quiet cedar forest, it is home to local Himalayan wildlife including snow leopards, Himalayan bears and various pheasants. It is a low-effort visit that works well for families and for anyone interested in the region's ecology, and it is a good first stop because it sets the context for the landscape you are in.

For views, head toward Mahasu Peak. The short walk or horse ride up gives you a broad panorama of the surrounding ranges — on a clear day it is one of the better views accessible without a long trek. There are also basic nature walks around the peak that are worth doing if you have the time. In winter, usually January and February, Kufri gets snow and basic activities like tobogganing become available, though this is also when the town is at its busiest.

Timing matters a lot in Kufri. December to February is for snow, but expect crowds, especially on weekends — if you want a quieter snow experience, go on a weekday. March to June gives you pleasant weather and clear views with fewer people. October to November is a lovely shoulder period: crisp skies, the start of the apple season nearby, and far fewer tourists than summer or winter. Avoid the peak holiday weekends if you can.

Kufri is about a 45-minute drive from Shimla via NH-5 and the Fagu–Kufri road. Taxis are the most common way to reach it, and state buses also connect Shimla to Kufri during the season. The accommodation in Kufri itself is limited and fills up fast at peak times, which is why many travellers prefer to stay a short drive away — a peaceful homestay near Theog lets you enjoy Kufri's sights during the day and return to a quiet setting in the evening.

You can spend the morning at the Nature Park and the Mahasu Peak viewpoints, stop at Fagu on the way back, and return to the homestay for a slow lunch on the balcony.
