Shimla is the gateway to the Himachal hills, and it deserves its reputation — the Mall Road, the Ridge, the Viceregal Lodge and the toy train are all worth seeing. But staying in Shimla town itself means dealing with the crowds, the traffic, and the premium prices that come with a popular hill station, particularly from May to July and over the winter holidays.

The alternative is to stay near Shimla rather than in it, and use the town as a day trip rather than your base. Done right, this gives you the best of both: you can spend a day walking the Mall Road and visiting Christ Church, then drive back to a quiet room with mountain air and no traffic noise.
