Theog Travel Guide: Places to Visit and Things to Do

Theog is a small hill town on NH-5, about 30 km east of Shimla, that most travellers drive through on the way to Kufri, Narkanda or the apple belt of Kotgarh. It rarely features on standard Himachal itineraries, which is precisely its appeal — it has the wide valley views and cedar-forest surroundings of the upper Shimla hills without the crowds that gather in the better-known stops.

The town itself is modest: a quiet bazaar, a few local eateries, and small temples in the surrounding villages. The real draw is the ridge. The villages just off the highway, like Kathot, sit on an east-facing ridgeline that catches sunrise over the Shali Tibba range, with views stretching across the pine-covered valleys toward Fagu. It is the kind of place that rewards slowing down rather than ticking off sights.

For things to do, start with the ridge walk around Kathot for sunrise valley views — carry a cup of chai and take your time. Walk through the apple orchards that surround Theog, particularly rewarding in October during the harvest. Drive the short distance to Fagu (8 km) for its terraced fields and roadside viewpoints. And use Theog as a base for the short drive to Kufri (22 km) for the Himalayan Nature Park and Mahasu Peak.

If you have a full day, the drive up to Narkanda and Hatu Peak is well worth it. The road climbs through deodar forest to nearly 2,700 metres, and the panoramic view from the top takes in a long sweep of the greater Himalaya. In autumn, the apple orchards of Kotgarh and Thanedhar along the way are a destination in themselves. Closer to Theog, the small local temples in the surrounding villages make for a quiet half-day of exploration.

The best time to visit is March to June for pleasant weather and clear views, and October to November for the apple harvest and crisp skies. Winters (December to February) can bring snow and cold nights — Theog gets less snow than Kufri or Narkanda but can still see a dusting. The monsoon (July to September) turns the hills vividly green but brings rain and the risk of road disruption, so check conditions before you travel.

Theog is on NH-5, about an hour's drive from Shimla, with regular state buses running between the two. The nearest major railhead is Shimla (narrow gauge) and the nearest airport is Jubbarhatti near Shimla.
